Richard de Crespigny
In November 2010, the Qantas A380 captain was at the controls of the world’s largest commercial jetliner when he faced catastrophe: one of the aircraft's four engines exploded and the damage to the aircraft was extensive. On top of ensuring that 440 passengers remained calm during the ordeal, Richard had the mammoth task of keeping the aircraft in the air and then landing it, successfully. For two hours he and his fellow crew made plans to safely manoeuvre the aircraft towards Singapore's Changi Airport.
The frightening incident brought into play Richard’s considerable skills of teamwork, leadership, crisis management and problem solving. This pivotal event has changed his life forever. His autobiography QF32 tells the story of the incident in gripping detail - it became a best-seller and award winner. In 2016, Richard was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the aviation industry.
